Maria and João had been trying to get pregnant for a long time. Actually, they had been trying for 2 years without success. Every month, Maria calculated her fertile window and hoped for the best.
But month after month, her period came. Until one month, something changed.
Her period didn’t come. One day late. Three days. A whole week.
“My period is late,” she told João. “Do you think it’s possible?”
She began to feel different — a little nausea in the morning, sore breasts, unusual tiredness. A suspicion of pregnancy grew inside her. She started to suspect she was pregnant, even before taking any test.
Finally, she decided to take a home pregnancy test — the urine test you buy at the pharmacy.
With shaky hands, she opened the box, followed the instructions, and waited.
One minute. Two minutes. Three.
And then… two pink lines appeared.
The test was positive.
She ran to find João, crying and laughing at the same time.
“The test came back positive!” she shouted. “We’re going to have a baby!”
The next day, they went to the doctor for confirmation of the pregnancy through a blood test and an ultrasound. And when the doctor showed them the tiny heartbeat on the screen, there was no more doubt.
After two years of waiting, hoping, and trying — Maria was finally pregnant.
